Tour Overview

The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, and offers a unique, less-traveled path to the summit. It's the only route starting from the northern side, making it drier and ideal for rainy seasons. It’s also quieter and offers panoramic views that few other trekkers get to experience. The descent follows the popular Marangu Route, giving you a full-circle mountain journey.

Tour Itinerary

🗓️ Day 1: Moshi – Rongai Gate – Simba Camp

We depart Moshi early and drive around the mountain’s eastern flank to Rongai Gate (1,950m). After registration, we begin our trek through pine forests and rural farmland. It’s a gentle climb, ideal for easing into the rhythm of the mountain.

By mid-afternoon, we reach Simba Camp on the edge of the moorland zone, where you can enjoy views stretching toward Kenya.

  • Elevation: 1,950m to 2,625m

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Forest

🗓️ Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave Camp

Today’s trail climbs steadily through moorland, with sweeping views of Kibo Peak and the eastern ice fields. The terrain opens up, revealing unique alpine plants and volcanic rocks.

We’ll arrive at Second Cave Camp for lunch and an acclimatization hike in the afternoon.

  • Elevation: 2,625m to 3,450m

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

🗓️ Day 3: Second Cave – Kikelewa Camp

As we continue toward Kibo’s eastern face, the route becomes steeper but remains manageable. The scenery is dramatic, with giant senecio plants and open mountain landscapes.

We reach Kikelewa Camp by early afternoon, tucked into a sheltered valley surrounded by rugged cliffs.

  • Elevation: 3,450m to 3,630m

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

🗓️ Day 4: Kikelewa – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

A short but steep climb leads us to Mawenzi Tarn, one of the most beautiful campsites on the mountain. Located beneath the spiky ridges of Mawenzi Peak, this spot offers a dramatic backdrop and an important acclimatization opportunity.

The afternoon is reserved for rest or short hikes around the tarn.

  • Elevation: 3,630m to 4,330m

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

🗓️ Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

We cross the lunar desert between Mawenzi and Kibo—one of the most surreal sections of the trek. The path is dry, dusty, and barren, resembling a moonscape.

We’ll reach Kibo Hut by early afternoon. Rest, hydrate, and eat early—summit night begins at midnight.

  • Elevation: 4,330m to 4,700m

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

🗓️ Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Summit night begins in the dark, with headlamps lighting the trail. We ascend slowly, stopping at Gilman’s Point (5,681m), where the sunrise greets us. From there, it’s a final push around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—Africa’s highest point.

After celebratory photos, we descend to Kibo for a rest, then continue to Horombo Hut, where green vegetation and oxygen return.

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m (summit), then down to 3,720m

  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

  • Habitat: Arctic to Moorland

🗓️ Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

Our final descent passes through heathland and forest, alive with birds and colobus monkeys. We arrive at Marangu Gate, collect your summit certificate, and drive back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration dinner.

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

🗓️ Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi

Our final descent winds through lush rainforest, with the trail often damp and rich in birdlife. We’ll arrive at Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive a certificate of completion and enjoy a well-earned lunch.

Afterward, we’ll drive back to Moshi, where a hot shower and celebratory dinner await.
