Tour Overview

Nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route”, the Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail to Kilimanjaro’s summit. It is the only route that offers hut accommodations instead of tents, making it a popular choice for climbers seeking a bit more comfort. Despite being one of the shortest options, this 6-day itinerary provides an extra acclimatization day—significantly improving summit success compared to the standard 5-day version.

Tour Itinerary

🗓️ Day 1: Moshi – Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

We begin with a scenic drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate (1,870m). After registration, our trek kicks off through lush rainforest filled with colobus monkeys, birds, and wildflowers.

After a gentle hike, we reach Mandara Hut, a collection of wooden A-frame cabins tucked into the forest. You can take a short walk to Maundi Crater in the afternoon for panoramic views toward Kenya.

  • Elevation: 1,870m to 2,700m

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

🗓️ Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Today’s trail transitions from rainforest to moorland. You’ll hike past giant heathers and volcanic outcrops with views opening up toward Mawenzi Peak, Kilimanjaro’s jagged second summit.

After a steady climb, we arrive at Horombo Hut, set on a grassy plateau with spectacular views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

  • Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

🗓️ Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut

This important rest day boosts your chance of summit success. You’ll take a short acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (4,000m)—named for the black-and-white mineral stripes on the rock face.

The remainder of the day is for rest, hydration, and soaking in the mountain air. Expect a stunning sunset over the plains below.

  • Elevation: 3,720m (day hike to 4,000m)

  • Hiking Time: 2–4 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland

🗓️ Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

The path becomes drier and more dramatic as you cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape here is stark and lunar—volcanic dust, rock, and the sense of entering the high-altitude zone.

We reach Kibo Hut, your base for summit night. After an early dinner, it’s straight to bed—tomorrow begins before midnight.

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m

  • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

🗓️ Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Summit day. Around midnight, we begin our final push to the top. The trail is steep and cold, winding past Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m) before arriving at Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim.

From here, it's a rewarding but challenging hike to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, we descend carefully back to Kibo for a break, then continue to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

  • Elevation: 4,700m to 5,895m, then down to 3,720m

  • Hiking Time: 12–14 hours

  • Habitat: Arctic, then Moorland

🗓️ Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

Your final descent leads back through heath and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you’ll collect your summit certificate. After signing out, we drive back to Moshi for a hot shower, rest, and celebration dinner.

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest
